Oil Markets Stabilize Amid Strategic Reserves Release But Hormuz Risks Persist

Global oil prices steadied Thursday after major economies announced coordinated strategic petroleum reserve releases yet analysts warn the move cannot offset looming Strait of Hormuz disruptions. The International Energy Agency confirmed member nations will release a combined ↑ 60 million barrels from emergency stockpiles over the coming months to counter supply shocks. Traders responded with cautious optimism as benchmark Brent crude dipped below ↓ $90 per barrel for the first time in weeks. However, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East remain the dominant risk factor. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard recently conducted naval exercises near the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly ↑ 20% of global oil transits daily. “The reserve release provides temporary relief but does nothing to address the underlying vulnerability of Middle Eastern shipping lanes,” said energy analyst Elena Kovacs at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies. “A single military escalation could erase these gains overnight.” The coordinated action follows months of elevated prices driven by sanctions on Russian exports and OPEC+ supply discipline. While the market absorbed the news without major volatility, futures contracts for later delivery showed persistent risk premiums reflecting fears of potential supply disruptions. Analysts at Goldman Sachs estimate that a sustained closure of Hormuz would push prices above ↑ $120 per barrel within weeks. The IEA emphasized that the reserve release represents a short-term measure, not a long-term solution to structural supply concerns. “This is about market stability, not energy security,” stated an IEA spokesperson in Paris. “The real challenge remains geopolitical uncertainty in critical maritime chokepoints.”
