Fed’s Rate Cut Calculus Shattered as Iran War Fuels Inflation, Gas Prices Soar

Federal Reserve policymakers face a high-stakes dilemma as they conclude their two-day meeting Wednesday: whether to maintain their forecast of one interest rate cut this year or abandon it entirely after Iran war-induced oil price shocks sent gasoline prices surging. Chair Jerome Powell is expected to announce the central bank will keep its benchmark rate unchanged at approximately 3.6% for the second consecutive meeting, but the quarterly projections could reveal a dramatic shift. Economists anticipate the Fed may revise its inflation forecast upward from December’s 2.6% projection for year-end 2026 to as high as 3%, potentially eliminating any room for rate cuts. Gas prices averaged $3.79 per gallon nationwide Tuesday, according to AAA, representing an 88-cent increase from one month ago. This inflationary pressure arrives as employment data shows unexpected weakness, with businesses shedding 92,000 jobs in February following a modest 130,000 gain in January. The unemployment rate ticked up to 4.4% from 4.3%. Powell’s term expires May 15, with President Trump’s nominee Kevin Warsh awaiting Senate confirmation amid delays over a Justice Department investigation. The Fed must now navigate a precarious path between combating inflation and supporting employment in an environment where both metrics move in opposing directions.
